Fleance is the son of Banquo who is a friend to Macbeth. Before Banquo's murder and Fleance's escape, Macbeth views Banquo as a threat due to the witches' prophesy that Banquo's lineage or rather descendants will be rulers. Macbeth then commissions assassins to attack and kill Banquo and his son while out in the fields.
